Well, the time is here for little man! POTTY TIME!
As most of my readers know, my son Rocco is on the spectrum. A lot of kids on the spectrum start potty training later, it really just depends on each child when. As every kid on the spectrum is unique in their own way. Rocco hasn’t been ready until recently, when his TSS gave us the go, as we have had seen signs that he is ready. There is a checklist they have that gives us the signs that we should start.
SO we are not just going FULL FLEDGE on the potty yet, as that is not how it works with children on the spectrum. It takes time and steps, as it is a big process for them.
We got the potty, the pull ups, and let him pick out his underwear.
Our amazing TSS made a social story to help us get started with potty training, for Rocco to look at and for us to use with him.
Really, we have the most amazing TSS, I consider her family. We love her.
Our plan this weekend:
To just put the potty out, show him it and get him familiar with it. Go over the story with him, talk to him about it. We will show him how we go on the potty, which is KEY for him to see mommy and daddy do it too. More Mike showing him, obviously, ha!
If things seem to be going good, we will ask him if he wants to go on the potty, but no pushing him to at all.
We also have a plan, once he does start going on the potty, to make a board. We are going to do a solar system board, each time he goes potty, he will get a planet to add on it. ( velcro style, so he can place them on there )
We are hoping that will motivate him and make it fun! Also maybe a little treat when he goes, like a couple m&m’s.
If you have any tips on potty training, let me know! Like if you did a reward system?
Wish us luck! He seems thrilled, HA!
